Where to look

Look in spruce and mixed forest along the roads from Pustevny, Bílá and Horní Bečva. Cep grows in moss under spruce, birch boletes on the edges of clearings with birch and aspen. In autumn honey fungus covers stumps left after bark beetle felling.

What grows here

penny bun / cep (prawdziwek), chanterelle (kurka), orange birch bolete (koźlarz czerwony), bay bolete (podgrzybek brunatny), honey fungus (opieńka miodowa)

Forest: Carpathian mountain spruce and beech

Season: July–October; peak in August and September.

Rules

In Czechia you may pick mushrooms in forests for your own use with no limit. Picking is allowed in the Beskydy CHKO, but national nature reserves have a stay-on-path rule and a picking ban. Selling mushrooms from someone else's forest is banned, and driving onto forest roads brings heavy fines.

About the forest

The Moravian-Silesian Beskids are the highest Czech part of the Carpathians, within the Beskydy Protected Landscape Area (CHKO). Spruce and beech on the slopes of Radhošť and Lysá hora give mushrooms from July. It is a favourite area for pickers from Ostrava and Moravian Wallachia.
