See the pre-saleWhere to look
Look in the needle litter under pines along forest roads from the Bunnygalore Road turn-off and Dalys Clearing. Saffron milk caps grow under young and middle-aged pines after autumn rain, slippery jacks at the same time. Pick only these two species unless you are sure of others.
What grows here
pine ring / saffron milk cap (rydz), slippery jack (maślak zwyczajny)
Forest: radiata pine plantations among native eucalypt forest
Season: March–June; peak in April and May.
Rules
The forest is managed by Forestry Corporation of NSW, and recreational mushroom picking in pine plantations is common. I found no clear rule on limits, so check current closures (logging, fire danger) on the forest's page. Picking is banned in NSW national parks, and deadly death caps grow in Australia.
About the forest
Belanglo State Forest in the Southern Highlands, on the Hume Highway between Sydney and Canberra, has large pine plantations where saffron milk caps and slippery jacks grow in autumn. It is one of the more popular pine mushroom spots near Sydney. Native eucalypt forest surrounds the plantations.
