Where to stand
Walk out of the village centre to the meadows on the valley slopes, where you see more sky. The valley is narrow, so the mountains hide the sky low on the horizon. Look high, halfway between the horizon and the zenith.
Horizon
A narrow valley in the Żywiec Beskids; the slopes hide the sky low on the horizon
Sky darkness (Bortle scale): 4
Rules
The meadows on the slopes are private, so do not enter fenced pastures and leave your car in a car park, not on the narrow road. Higher up, on Pilsko, there is a nature reserve, so do not leave the trails at night.
About the spot
Sopotnia Wielka in the Żywiec Beskids is the first International Dark Sky Community in Poland, certified by DarkSky International in 2023. The village lies in the valley of the Sopotnia stream below the Pilsko massif, in the Żywiec Landscape Park. Street lighting here is shielded, and the village hosts the Polish Dark-Sky Festival.
