Where to stand

Park in the car park on road St 2287 by Schwarzes Moor and walk a short way from the cars onto open grassland. The plateau gives a view of almost the whole sky. Bring warm clothes, because nights at this height are cold even in summer.

Horizon

A treeless plateau at about 770 m; the sky is open in almost every direction

Sky darkness (Bortle scale): 3

Rules

Schwarzes Moor is a nature reserve with a boardwalk you must not leave, so do not walk onto the bog. Do not camp or light fires in the reserve.

About the spot

The Rhön Biosphere Reserve, where Bavaria, Hesse and Thuringia meet, has been an International Dark Sky Reserve (Sternenpark Rhön) since 2014. The highest part of the range is a set of wide, treeless plateaus above 700 m. Schwarzes Moor is a raised bog in the Bavarian part of the High Rhön.
