Where to stand
Watch from near the visitor centre or from the park campground. The overlooks above the rock bridges have open sky, but do not hike down into the canyon at night. Check the park website for night sky programmes on your dates.
Horizon
A canyon-cut plateau; from the canyon rim the sky is open almost to the horizon
Sky darkness (Bortle scale): 2
Rules
This is National Park Service land, so there is an entry fee, collecting rocks and leaving the paths are not allowed, and you may only stay overnight at the campground. Summer brings thunderstorms and winter brings frost.
About the spot
Natural Bridges in south-east Utah became the world’s first International Dark Sky Park in 2007. The National Park Service rated its sky as class 2 on the Bortle scale, which means very dark. Large towns are far away, and the desert air is dry and clear.
Do not miss the next window
The best windows last a few hours: after a storm, after rain, on a clear night with an active Sun. Sign up and we will email you when the index at your spots goes above 60.
