Where to stand
There is no free access: you can only stay at the lodges and camps that operate in the reserve, and they also run stargazing. From this latitude the southern showers are well placed. The dry season, roughly May to October, gives the most clear nights.
Horizon
Desert with dunes and mountains on the horizon; open sky in every direction
Sky darkness (Bortle scale): 1
Rules
The reserve is private, so entry and overnight stays are only possible by booking with an operator inside it. Do not drive at night or off the marked tracks. The coordinates show the middle of the reserve, not a public viewing point.
About the spot
NamibRand is a private nature reserve on the edge of the Namib Desert that became an International Dark Sky Reserve in 2012. It borders Namib-Naukluft National Park and lies very far from any town. It is one of the darkest places a visitor can reach.
Do not miss the next window
The best windows last a few hours: after a storm, after rain, on a clear night with an active Sun. Sign up and we will email you when the index at your spots goes above 60.
