Where to stand

Park by the road to El Pilar and pick an open spot on the volcanic sand, away from the cars. At this height you are often above the clouds that sit lower down over the coast. Bring a jacket, because nights here are cool all year.

Horizon

A volcanic plain on the island ridge; a wide view, often above the clouds

Sky darkness (Bortle scale): 2

Rules

Llano del Jable lies in the Cumbre Vieja Natural Park, so do not take rocks, stay on the roads and do not light fires. Lighting rules apply on the island, so use a red torch and do not point headlights at the sky.

About the spot

La Palma protects its night sky by a special 1988 law (Ley del Cielo), because the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory stands on the island summit. The whole island is also a Starlight Reserve. Llano del Jable is a plain of black volcanic ash in the middle of the island, near the El Pilar refuge.

Do not miss the next window

The best windows last a few hours: after a storm, after rain, on a clear night with an active Sun. Sign up and we will email you when the index at your spots goes above 60.
