Where to stand

Park at Kielder Castle in Kielder village or at one of the reservoir car parks and walk away from the lights. The area is heavily forested, so look for an open spot by the water. Book observatory events in advance.

Horizon

Forest and the Kielder Water reservoir; open sky over the water and in felled areas

Sky darkness (Bortle scale): 2

Rules

The forest is run by Forestry England, which lets you walk on forest roads and paths but does not allow fires or barbecues. Kielder Observatory is a private site, so go there only for booked events.

About the spot

Northumberland International Dark Sky Park, with Kielder Forest and Kielder Water at its centre, gained DarkSky International status in 2013. It is one of the largest areas of protected dark sky in Europe. Kielder Observatory on Black Fell above the village runs ticketed sky events.
