Where to stand

Park in the car park on Haddon Lane and walk a short way onto the open moor. You do not need to reach the top, because a few hundred metres from the car park the sky is already open. Return the same way, because the path is easy to lose in the dark.

Horizon

Hilltop moorland; a wide view in every direction

Sky darkness (Bortle scale): 3

Rules

Sheep and ponies graze on Exmoor, so close gates behind you and keep dogs on a lead. Do not light fires or barbecues on the moor, because it burns easily.

About the spot

In 2011 Exmoor National Park became the first International Dark Sky Reserve in Europe. Haddon Hill is a heather-covered hill on the south-east edge of the park, above Wimbleball Lake. From the open slope you see almost the whole sky.

Do not miss the next window

The best windows last a few hours: after a storm, after rain, on a clear night with an active Sun. Sign up and we will email you when the index at your spots goes above 60.
