Where to stand
Pick the open meadows around the village, away from the houses. The land is flat, so you see the whole sky down to the horizon. Park in a public car park and do not drive onto farm tracks.
Horizon
Flat meadows and the Havel floodplain; the sky is open right down to the horizon
Sky darkness (Bortle scale): 3
Rules
The meadows around Gülper See are an important site for waterbirds and are partly protected, so stay on the roads, especially in autumn when flocks of geese and cranes roost here. Do not shine strong torches across the meadows.
About the spot
Westhavelland Nature Park was named an International Dark Sky Reserve by DarkSky International in February 2014. It lies about 80 km west of Berlin and is still one of the darkest places in Germany. The village of Gülpe sits in the middle of the park, by the Gülper See lake.
Do not miss the next window
The best windows last a few hours: after a storm, after rain, on a clear night with an active Sun. Sign up and we will email you when the index at your spots goes above 60.
