Where to look

Go down to the beach on the east side of the harbour, below East Cliff, and walk towards Saltwick at low tide. Search the shingle and the stones on the rock scars. You can tell jet because it is light, black and leaves a brown streak.

What you can find

ammonites, belemnites, jet, fossil wood

Best wind: N, NE, NW

Rules and safety

Search loose beach material, collect only a few specimens and keep hammering to a minimum, as the North York Moors National Park advises. Set out at least an hour before low tide and return in time, because the tide reaches the cliff foot. Keep away from the cliffs.

About the cliff

Whitby is a harbour town below a ruined abbey on the Yorkshire Jurassic coast. Its shales are the source of Whitby jet, the black stone famous in Victorian jewellery. On the beach below East Cliff you can find ammonites and belemnites washed out of the cliff.
