Where to look

Park by the Naze Tower and take the signed steps down to the beach. Look for shark teeth in the shingle and dark sand near the water line, on a falling tide. Red Crag shells lie in the debris at the cliff foot.

What you can find

shark teeth, Red Crag shells, fossil wood, ray teeth

Best wind: E, NE, SE

Rules and safety

Essex Wildlife Trust allows collecting fossils that have eroded onto the beach, but not from the cliff. Do not dig into the cliff and do not climb the slips. Around high tide the sea reaches the cliff foot, so go at low tide.

About the cliff

The Naze is a headland north of Walton, with a cliff of London Clay capped by Red Crag sands. The clay gives Eocene shark teeth, and the Red Crag gives shells about 2.5 million years old. The cliff retreats fast, so the material keeps renewing.

Do not miss the next window

The best windows last a few hours: after a storm, after rain, on a clear night with an active Sun. Sign up and we will email you when the index at your spots goes above 60.
