Where to look

Walk down through the village to the harbour and, at low tide, go east below the cliff towards Port Mulgrave. Look for round nodules lying loose on the scars. Do not break them open on the spot; judge first whether they are worth taking.

What you can find

ammonites, belemnites, bivalves, trace fossils

Best wind: N, NE, NW

Rules and safety

Collect loose material and only a little. Do not hammer the cliff, which falls often. The tide cuts off the way back below the cliff, so set out before low tide and return in time.

About the cliff

Staithes is a fishing village in a narrow ravine between high cliffs. Lower Jurassic shales and mudstones with hard nodules are exposed here. Many of the nodules contain ammonites.
