Where to look

Take the steep path down from the Whitby Holiday Park side. At low tide, check the rock scars and stones below Saltwick Nab. Ammonites often sit in hard nodules lying loose on the beach.

What you can find

ammonites, belemnites, jet, bivalves

Best wind: N, NE, E

Rules and safety

Collect a few loose fossils from the beach and do not hammer the cliff. The bay is narrow and the tide quickly cuts off the headlands, so get onto the beach before low tide and watch your return time. The path down can be slippery after rain.

About the cliff

Saltwick Bay is a small bay east of Whitby, between Saltwick Nab and Black Nab. The cliff is made of Lower Jurassic Alum Shale, rich in ammonites. After a north-easterly storm there is plenty of fresh material on the scars.
