Where to look

Go down the slipway at the bottom of the village and walk south across the scars towards Boggle Hole. Search the shingle between the scars and the loose stones. The most fresh material appears after an easterly storm.

What you can find

ammonites, belemnites, Gryphaea oysters, crinoids

Best wind: E, NE, SE

Rules and safety

Collect a few loose fossils and do not hammer the scars or the cliff. The scars are slippery with seaweed and the tide comes back fast, up to the cliff. Set out at least an hour before low tide and check the tide tables.

About the cliff

Robin Hood's Bay is a wide bay with an old smugglers' village. At low tide it uncovers huge curved scars of Lower Jurassic shale. It is one of the best places in Yorkshire for ammonites.
