Where to look

Park at Cobb Road and walk west over the pebbles. Check loose blocks, wave-worn slabs and the shingle at the water line, especially after a storm. See the Ammonite Pavement at the lowest tides.

What you can find

ammonites, Gryphaea oysters, crinoids, marine reptile bones (rare)

Best wind: S, SE, SW

Rules and safety

The beach is part of the Axmouth to Lyme Regis Undercliffs SSSI and National Nature Reserve. The Undercliffs Fossil Collecting Code applies: leave the Ammonite Pavement and rock ledges intact, do not break up large blocks and do not dig into the cliff. At high tide the sea reaches the cliff foot near the headland, so come back in good time.

About the cliff

Monmouth Beach is the beach west of the Cobb harbour in Lyme Regis. This is the area where Mary Anning found ichthyosaur skeletons. The beach holds the famous Ammonite Pavement, a limestone ledge with hundreds of large ammonites showing on its surface.

Do not miss the next window

The best windows last a few hours: after a storm, after rain, on a clear night with an active Sun. Sign up and we will email you when the index at your spots goes above 60.
