Where to look

From the western end of the beach, walk west along the shore below the cliff. Look for the gravel bands a storm leaves behind and fresh debris at the foot of slumps. Wet a flint to see the outline of a sea urchin more clearly. The local museum in Rerik runs fossil-hunting workshops.

What you can find

sea urchins in flint, belemnites, sponges in flint

Best wind: N, NW, NE

Rules and safety

Take only loose stones from the beach and do not dig into the cliff. Check the signs in case a stretch lies in a nature reserve. The cliff falls after storms, heavy rain and thaws, so walk the beach away from its foot and stay away during storms.

About the cliff

Kühlungsborn is a seaside resort on the Mecklenburg coast, west of Rostock. West of the town, towards Meschendorf and Rerik, runs a low cliff of glacial till. As on the Polish cliffs, the fossils sit in flints and pebbles carried by the ice sheet.

Do not miss the next window

The best windows last a few hours: after a storm, after rain, on a clear night with an active Sun. Sign up and we will email you when the index at your spots goes above 60.
