Where to look

Walk from Putgarten to the cape or to the village of Vitt. The Veilchentreppe stairway, south of the old hillfort, leads down to the beach between Arkona and Vitt. Check the flint bands at the water line after an easterly storm.

What you can find

sea urchins in flint, belemnites, sponges in flint, oysters

Best wind: E, NE, N

Rules and safety

In Jasmund National Park you may not take stones or fossils, which is why this spot is outside it. We found no collecting ban at Arkona, but check the signs on site. The cliff slumps often and the Königstreppe stairway has been closed since 2012 after cliff falls, so do not stand under the face.

About the cliff

Cape Arkona is the northern tip of Rügen, with a cliff of white chalk and glacial till. It lies outside Jasmund National Park. The waves wash flints and fossils from the Cretaceous chalk sea out of the cliff.

Do not miss the next window

The best windows last a few hours: after a storm, after rain, on a clear night with an active Sun. Sign up and we will email you when the index at your spots goes above 60.
