Where to stand

Leave the car at the paid car park by the beach and walk onto the sand or the flat rocks at the shore. Look north and north-west over the sea, and up to the zenith when the aurora is strong. At low tide water stays in hollows in the rocks and reflects the aurora well.

View towards the pole

Open sea to the north-west and north, with rocky slopes on both sides

Sky darkness (Bortle scale): 2

Rules and safety

Entry and parking are paid, and fees are collected by hosts from the local community association. Pitch tents and park motorhomes according to the camping zone map on site. Wet and icy rocks by the water are very slippery, and the waves can be high.

About the spot

Uttakleiv is a sandy beach on the north shore of Vestvågøy in Lofoten. The beach faces the Norwegian Sea to the north-west and there are almost no lights. At a geomagnetic latitude of about 67°, the aurora often appears high in the sky.
