Where to stand

Leave the car at the car park by the village and walk along the road to the bird tower in the meadows. From the tower the horizon is flat all around. Look north over the water; the glow of Copenhagen lies in the same direction, so a faint aurora is harder to tell apart from it.

View towards the pole

Flat meadows and water all around; to the north, across the bay, the glow of Copenhagen

Sky darkness (Bortle scale): 3

Rules and safety

The Nyord meadows are a Ramsar wetland important for geese, ducks and waders, so stay on the road and the path to the tower. In winter the meadows are often flooded. Use a red light, because this is a protected dark sky area.

About the spot

Nyord is a small island linked to Møn by a bridge, with salt meadows and a single village. Together with Møn it forms Dark Sky Park Møn and Nyord, the first such park in the Nordic countries. At a geomagnetic latitude of about 55°, the aurora shows low in the north during stronger storms, much as on the Polish coast.

Do not miss the next window

The best windows last a few hours: after a storm, after rain, on a clear night with an active Sun. Sign up and we will email you when the index at your spots goes above 60.
