Where to stand
Stop at the Kilpisjärvi Nature Centre (luontokeskus) and walk down to the lake shore. Look north-west over the lake and up to the zenith. Saana blocks part of the northern sky, but it makes a good foreground under the aurora.
View towards the pole
Saana fell to the north, and over the lake to the north-west an open sky and the border mountains
Sky darkness (Bortle scale): 2
Rules and safety
Across the lake lies Malla Strict Nature Reserve, where you may only walk on the marked trail. Do not climb Saana at night in winter: the slopes are steep and the wind is strong. The lake ice is unsafe while it is forming and during the thaw.
About the spot
Kilpisjärvi is a village in the 'arm' of Finland, near the borders with Sweden and Norway, on the lake of the same name. Saana fell rises above the village. At a geomagnetic latitude of about 66.7°, the aurora is often high, and there are very few lamps.
