Where to stand
Drive up the road to the top and leave the car at the car park by the restaurant. Walk a few dozen metres from the building and look north and up to the zenith. The lights of Saariselkä are at the foot of the fell, to the south-west.

Rules and safety
The road to the top is often icy or snowed over, so check it before driving up at night. Everyman's rights let you walk on the fell, but keep off ski tracks. The nearby national park follows Metsähallitus rules, including snowmobiles only on marked routes.
About the spot
Kaunispää is a fell above Saariselkä, on the edge of Urho Kekkonen National Park. A road leads to the top, and from there you see the sky all around, above the forest. At a geomagnetic latitude of about 65°, the aurora is frequent here, even when activity is low.
