Rules and safety

The trail up Haldde is about 9 km long and in winter it is not a night walk without preparation and gear. On the E6, park only in car parks and lay-bys, not on the verge. Allemannsretten lets you walk on uncultivated land, away from houses.

About the spot

Kåfjord is a village on an arm of Altafjorden, about 18 km west of Alta. On Mount Haldde above the village, Kristian Birkeland set up an aurora observatory in 1899, one of the first in the world. The village sits at a geomagnetic latitude of about 67°, so the aurora is often high in the sky.
