Where to stand

Walk to the river bank by the village and look north across the river. Move away from the lit hotel buildings and the church. On a clear night any open river bank outside the village also works well.

View towards the pole

The Torne river and forest to the north, with no high mountains

Sky darkness (Bortle scale): 4

Rules and safety

Do not walk on the Torne ice: a strong current runs under it, and blocks of ice are cut from the river for the hotel. The hotel grounds are private. Allemansrätten lets you walk on open land, away from houses.

About the spot

Jukkasjärvi is a village on the Torne river, about 17 km east of Kiruna, known for its ice hotel. The land is flat and wooded, and the lights of Kiruna stay far to the west. At a geomagnetic latitude of about 65.6°, the aurora often crosses high above the river.
