Where to stand
Stop at the car park by the lagoon and stand on the shore on the road side. Look north over the lagoon and the glacier, and up to the zenith when the aurora is strong. Across the road is Diamond Beach, where blocks of ice lie on black sand.
View towards the pole
To the north, the lagoon with icebergs and the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier tongue

Rules and safety
The lagoon is part of Vatnajökull National Park. Do not step onto ice floes or shore ice, because the blocks roll over and the water is freezing. On Diamond Beach the waves are strong and unpredictable, so keep back from the waterline; parking is paid.
About the spot
Jökulsárlón is a glacier lagoon at the foot of Breiðamerkurjökull, on Route 1 in south-east Iceland. Icebergs float in the water, and the nearest town, Höfn, is about 80 km away. At a geomagnetic latitude of about 68°, the aurora often appears high above the glacier.
