Where to stand
Stand on the open clearing and look north, down the slope, where the horizon is low. Come in daylight, park in a marked car park and check the access rules, because the road is narrow. Move away from the mountain hut and the lamps.
View towards the pole
Open clearing, the ground drops north towards Świeradów-Zdrój
Sky darkness (Bortle scale): 4
Rules and safety
The area has peat bogs and protected land, so keep to the roads and trails and do not walk on the bogs. In winter expect snowdrifts and frost, and mountain weather changes fast.
About the spot
Hala Izerska is in the Jizera Mountains, near the Izera Dark Sky Park. The park was created on 4 November 2009 on the Polish-Czech border, covers almost 75 km² and was the first transboundary dark sky park. At about 50.85° N you will usually see aurora here only at Kp 8 and 9, sometimes at Kp 7.
