Where to stand
Leave the car at the Fish Lake trail car park and pick an open spot with no trees overhead. Look north and up to the zenith. The glow of the town is to the north-east.
View towards the pole
A valley with mountains on both sides, the glow of Whitehorse to the north-east
Sky darkness (Bortle scale): 2
Rules and safety
Fish Lake Road is often icy and steep in winter, so check it before you go. Do not walk on the lake ice unless you are sure of its thickness. In winter it gets colder than minus 30 °C, and phone coverage outside town can be poor.
About the spot
Fish Lake is a mountain lake west of Whitehorse, about 20 minutes' drive from town along Fish Lake Road. Whitehorse lies at a geomagnetic latitude of about 64°, near the southern edge of the auroral oval. The aurora can be high in the sky here even at moderate activity.
