Where to stand
From the Abisko Turiststation walk down to the shore of Torneträsk and look north. Higher up, on Mount Nuolja, the paid Aurora Sky Station is reached by chairlift. When the aurora is strong, also look south-east towards the Lapporten pass.

Rules and safety
Abisko National Park has its own rules, including no snowmobiles off marked routes; check them on sverigesnationalparker.se. Do not walk on the lake ice unless you are sure of its thickness. Cross the railway only at marked crossings.
About the spot
Abisko is a village in Swedish Lapland, on Lake Torneträsk, at the edge of Abisko National Park. The surrounding mountains often hold back the clouds, so the sky over Abisko is said to be clear more often than nearby. At a geomagnetic latitude of about 66°, the aurora is frequent and high.
