Where to look

Search ridges and south-facing sagebrush slopes where animals wintered, and the edges of aspen above the valleys. Mule deer leave their sheds lower, elk higher near timber.

Species

elk (wapiti), mule deer, moose

Season: Mule deer shed from January to March, elk from March to April. Public land opens on May 1.

Terrain: Bridger-Teton National Forest and BLM land: sagebrush hills, aspen

Rules and closures

On public land west of the Continental Divide, collecting sheds is banned from January 1 until 6:00 a.m. on May 1 (non-residents until 6:00 a.m. on May 8, with a conservation stamp), under Wyoming Game and Fish Chapter 61. Some state and BLM lands have separate winter closures, so check the WGFD maps.
