Where to look

Search south-facing slopes and juniper ridges above the valleys, where animals wintered, and near springs and creeks. After a hard winter sheds lie lower, closer to the valley floor.

Species

elk (wapiti), mule deer

Season: Mule deer shed from January to March, elk from March to April. Search in April and May, but avoid animals still on winter range.

Terrain: Shoshone National Forest and BLM land: dry slopes, juniper, conifer forest

Rules and closures

This area is east of the Divide, so the Chapter 61 state closure does not cover it. Many Wildlife Habitat Management Areas and some BLM land are closed to people in winter, so check with WGFD and the BLM. Yellowstone is closed to collecting entirely.

About the area

Cody lies east of the Continental Divide, next to Shoshone National Forest. The Shoshone and Clarks Fork valleys are winter range for elk and mule deer. Chapter 61 does not apply here, but other closures do.
