Where to look

Search south-facing sagebrush slopes and gentle ridges above the valley. Places near springs and small creeks are worth checking.

Species

elk (wapiti), mule deer

Season: Mule deer shed from January to March, elk from March to April. Search from March to May, once animals leave winter range.

Terrain: Salmon-Challis National Forest and BLM land: dry slopes, sagebrush

Rules and closures

Since July 1, 2024 non-residents need a valid Idaho hunting license (not a small game license) to search for and possess sheds. Idaho Fish and Game announces seasonal winter range closures, so check them before you go. Do not chase or harass animals.

About the area

Challis lies in the upper Salmon River valley, surrounded by large public lands. In winter mule deer and elk come down from the mountains onto the dry slopes. The open country is good for glassing.
