See the pre-saleWhere to look
Search sunny south-facing slopes and the edges of valley meadows, where deer winter and feed. Walk along forest rides and old skid trails, and after the thaw check where trails cross streams. In spring go early, before the ground layer turns green.
Species
red deer, roe deer
Season: Stags shed from February to April, most in March. Snow lies long in the mountains, so the best search time is usually April and early May.
Terrain: Carpathian beech and fir forest, mountain meadows, valleys with meadows
Rules and closures
Bieszczady National Park and nature reserves are excluded, because collecting antlers is banned there. Outside them, do not enter wildlife refuges or plantations marked with a no-entry sign and do not disturb animals (Arts. 26 and 30 of the Forest Act). There are wolves and bears, so carry a map and do not leave food.
About the area
The Bieszczady have one of the strongest populations of Carpathian red deer in Poland. Stags here carry heavy, wide antlers, and in winter they come down to the valleys, where there is less snow. Baligród and its surroundings are a good base outside Bieszczady National Park.
